Women's & Children's Obstetrics

Obstetrics

Monument Health physicians in Rapid City and Spearfish deliver over 2,700 babies a year – more than any other provider in western South Dakota. Our board-certified obstetricians in Spearfish specialize in pregnancy, childbirth and female reproductive systems. They’ll take care of you throughout your pregnancy and provide follow-up care for years to come.

Visitors to Monument Health Rapid City Hospital Women’s and Children’s Services will need to use a four-digit passcode to reach the Labor & Delivery, Mother Baby, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Pediatric departments on the second and third floors near the hospital’s West Entrance elevators. The Children’s Miracle Network funded the project to keep our most vulnerable populations safe.

Upon check-in, the patient or their guardian will be given the passcode. They can share the passcode with friends and family members for visitation. The visitors will use the passcode to enter the Labor & Delivery, Mother Baby, NICU or Pediatric departments.

  • The couple has been trying to get pregnant for one year and the woman is under the age of 35.
  • The woman is over the age of 35 and the couple has been trying to get pregnant for at least six months.
  • The woman has a history of pelvic infection, endometriosis or irregular cycles.

Fertility services are offered in Spearfish, and include:

  • Evaluation of couples seeking pregnancy
  • Ovulation induction
  • Insemination using the male partner’s sperm or anonymous donor sperm
  • Fertility preservation

Labor and Delivery

Labor and delivery services are available at the Rapid City  and Spearfish hospitals.

In Rapid City, patients with scheduled deliveries (i.e. scheduled C-sections, scheduled inductions), will use Entrance 6 on the northwest side of the hospital. All other patients, should check in at the emergency department.

In Spearfish, patients should check in at the emergency department.

Please take time to familiarize yourself with the emergency department entrance and parking before your big day. Once you check in, emergency department caregivers will call your care team to inform them of your arrival. You will be escorted to labor and delivery and will complete your registration at your bedside. Your nurse will ask you some questions that will help us assess whether you need to be admitted for labor.

Other assessments may include:

  • Monitoring your baby’s heart rate
  • Notifying the physician or midwife
  • Obtaining orders for care which can include an IV, medications and tests

Our registered nurses are here to support your desires during your special day. We will keep you informed and provide comfort measures throughout your birthing experience. We provide peanut balls for comfort, and can assist with position changes to promote labor progression. For specific birth preferences, please provide us with a copy of birth preferences when you are admitted to the hospital.

We will ask if you would like us to place your newborn on your chest immediately after delivery. Placing your newborn with his or her skin touching yours helps with transition to life outside the womb. We encourage skin-to-skin contact throughout your stay to promote your newborn’s warmth, emotional well-being and parental bonding. Fathers are also encouraged to perform skin-to-skin contact with their newborn.

MONUMENT HEALTH RAPID CITY HOSPITAL MAP

High-risk Pregnancies

Many women with high-risk pregnancies are referred to Rapid City Hospital to consult with obstetricians and neonatologists. Babies delivered at Rapid City Hospital are immediately evaluated in the NICU. Critically ill newborns from other hospitals are frequently transferred to Rapid City Hospital by our Neonatal Transport Team.

Neonatal Transport Team

The Neonatal Transport Team consists of registered nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists specially trained in the stabilization, management and transport of ill and premature newborns by ambulance or airplane. The transport team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to transport your baby to the NICU at Rapid City Hospital. In the instance your baby needs care that Rapid City Hospital cannot provide, the transport team will safely transport your baby to a hospital that can provide the required care.
