RAPID CITY, S.D. (Sept. 11, 2020) – Chantel Biggins, Registered Nurse with the Monument Health Heart and Vascular Unit, has been recognized with the prestigious DAISY Award. A national program, the award is presented to nurses across the United States who go above and beyond for their patients and community. Chantel was nominated by family members of two patients.
One patient had an unexpected stroke while Chantel was in his room. “She quickly responded by doing all of the stroke testing and prepared us that she was calling for help, and immediately the room and hall were filled with professional help who showed us such empathy,” said the nominator.
Again when the patient was about to be discharged, Chantel noticed he was still very weak. She spoke with the doctor, and arrangements were made to get the patient into a Rehabilitation Center. “Chantel helped us so much through such a scary stressful time. We laughed together, we cried together and formed a lasting bonding friendship,” the nominator added.
Similar to the first patient, Chantel noticed changes in a patient before he was discharged, and she called for stroke assistance. “We are all so thankful for her awareness,” said the nominator. “We truly owe his life to her! He is back home and much improved due to her quick action!”
The DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses recognizes those who display dedication to the health and wellness of their patients. The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in California in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “diseases attacking the immune system.” The DAISY Award continues to recognize and celebrate the outstanding professionalism and compassion that nurses bring to patients and their families every day.
