RAPID CITY, S.D. (April 28, 2021) – Megan Carreiro, a Registered Nurse at Rapid City Hospital, has received the prestigious DAISY Award. A national program, the award is presented to nurses who go above and beyond for their patients and community. She was nominated by a patient.
After a terrible accident, the patient woke up in the hospital with no memory of how they got there, the patient was told that they wouldn’t be able to walk for three months. Although very troubled by the situation, the patient could count on Megan to help stay positive.
“Her care and understanding of my physical and mental health were instrumental in keeping everything upbeat and positive,” said the patient. “She was never without a smile in her eyes as she wore her COVID mask; her warm and understanding heart kept any negativity I had expressed at bay and filled the hope of my future with nothing less than sure-footed promise.”
They went on to say, “Monument Health is without a doubt considered an awesome healthcare facility because of people like her who clearly see her job as so much more than what she was hired for.”
The DAISY Award recognizes the outstanding professionalism and compassion that nurses bring to patients and families every day. It was established by the DAISY Foundation in California in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “diseases attacking the immune system.” Nurses in Rapid City are selected 12 times a year for this recognition. Nurses are also honored in Custer, Lead-Deadwood, Spearfish and Sturgis. Visit monument.health/daisy to nominate.
