Giving Tuesday Feature: Wendy’s Story

Your health can change unexpectedly at any time, as Wendy experienced first-hand. She found exceptional cancer care right at home and is happy to be a cancer survivor supporting future cancer patient needs at Monument Health this Giving Tuesday, November 28th: https://monument.health/givingtuesday.
Read Wendy’s story below:

As a healthcare provider for 40 years and someone who has made healthy life choices, I felt that I had a good handle on my health. Then an ultrasound to look for gallstones led to more tests, scans, and biopsies. I was shocked to learn that I had stage 4 lung cancer with extensive metastatic disease. I have never smoked and remember thinking, “I felt healthy, but I have tumors everywhere that I didn’t know about.”
The following weeks led to treatments at Monument Health Cancer Care Institute. I credit my oncologists, Dr. Eastmo and Dr. Azzouqa, for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of my rare cancer. Their attentiveness and expertise meant I had appropriate testing and a personalized treatment plan. Numerous Cancer Care Institute caregivers provided care, support, and resources to improve my cancer journey. After six months of treatment, none of my tumors were visible on scans. While this is likely to change over time, at three years I am living my best life with cancer.
My personal experience at Monument Health Cancer Care Institute is exceptional. I realize from my online support group that the level of care I receive at Monument Health is not always the norm across the country. Many fellow cancer patients, some from large cancer care centers, have stories of misdiagnosis and/or inappropriate treatment plans for this rare cancer. My team at Monument Health is truly one of the best – providing personal, empathetic, and expert care.
Please join me this Giving Tuesday, November 28th, in supporting cancer care for patients at Monument Health Cancer Care Institute. As I experienced, you never know when a cancer diagnosis may affect you or a loved one. Cancer care takes many forms: cure, comfort, transportation to an appointment, a wig, or just a calm place to relax. Your support gives Monument Health Cancer Care Institute the resources to provide state of the art cancer care and patient services.–Wendy A.
