Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Pharmacy Residency Program

Rapid City Hospital has two PGY2 residency programs: oncology and critical care. Each program accepts one resident who begins every July. Residents are full-time and benefit-eligible. Residents will conduct and present research as well as have an opportunity to receive a teaching certificate and a leadership certificate. Preceptors tailor the program to meet residents’ individual goals.

PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

All resident positions are offered through the ASHP Resident Matching Program. Applications are accepted from November through January, and applicants are selected for onsite interviews in January and February. Oncology

The PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency Program at Rapid City Hospital is a 12-month program providing advanced training in oncology with a focus on adult oncology patients. The PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy resident is involved in all phases of management of oncology and hematology patients from Monument Health Cancer Care Institute, along with Rapid City Hospital’s inpatient oncology service. The pharmacy team is imbedded in our multidisciplinary oncology program and provides compassionate, evidenced-based, progressive and integrated oncology and hematology care and is accountable for optimal drug therapy outcomes of cancer patients throughout the continuum of care.

Critical Care

The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program at Rapid City Hospital is a 12-month program providing advanced training in the care of critically ill adult patients. Rapid City Hospital includes four intensive care units that make up 39 ICU beds: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Coronary Intensive Care Unit (CCU), Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), and Transitional Intensive Care Unit (TICU). Patient demographics vary considerably and may include cardiology patients (acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, arrhythmias, etc.), critically ill medical patients (respiratory failure, acute and chronic kidney injury, overdoses, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeds, and acute and chronic liver failure, etc.) and surgical patients (trauma, cardiothoracic, vascular, and neurosurgical). Each unit is a closed unit that has three intensivists each day. The resident will work closely with this group of providers.
