Six doctors complete Family Medicine Residency

RAPID CITY, S.D. (July 1, 2022) – Monument Health announced that six physicians graduated from the Rapid City Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program on Thursday, June 30. Three of the six will remain in western South Dakota to practice medicine at Monument Health facilities.

Each year the Family Medicine Residency Program accepts six medical school graduates into a three-year program of training in a variety of family medicine roles with an emphasis on rural health care. This year’s graduates were honored at a ceremony at The Monument in Rapid City.

“The goal of this program is to recruit and train medical school graduates to specialize in family medicine. It’s important that we continue to train physicians and make sure they understand the dynamics of rural health care, ” said Family Medicine Residency Program Director Bobbie Schneller, D.O. “I’m especially pleased that half of this year’s class will stay with Monument Health after graduation.”

This year’s graduates include:

Chief Resident Sarah Lewis, D.O., of Sturgis. She will join the Sturgis Hospital and Clinic on Aug 1.
Devin Crane, D.O., of Bennington, Idaho, will join Monument Health Spearfish North 10th Street Clinic beginning Aug. 1.
Megan Ruffcorn, D.O., of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will join Monument Health Lead-Deadwood Hospital & Clinic on Sept. 1.
Chief Resident Mitchell Schmidt, M.D., of Omaha, Neb., will have a rural practice in Corydon, Iowa.
Elise Dick, M.D., of Munich, N.D., has been accepted into an Obstetrics Fellowship at Grand Forks, N.D.
Stephen Takasaki, D.O., of Spanish Fork, Utah, has been accepted into a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Dartmouth, Maine.
