RAPID CITY, S.D. (Oct. 5, 2021) –
Sarah Rathbun, a Registered Nurse at Rapid City Hospital Labor and Delivery, has received the prestigious DAISY Award. A national program, the award is presented to nurses who go above and beyond for their patients and community. Sarah was nominated by a patient.
The patient was struggling with delivery when she met Sarah, who immediately took steps to put her at ease. “The very first thing she did was let me know I was going to be in good hands and I immediately felt reassured. She got down on her knees to my eye level and spoke to me very empathetically,” read the nomination.
Sarah helped the patient to feel safe throughout labor, but she also modeled excellent bedside manner for a nurse extern. The patient stated, “she did an amazing job teaching the extern she had with her. I was very impressed with her bedside manner, the way she spoke to her extern and all the education she provided.”
Giving birth is no easy task, but for this patient, Sarah’s help made a world of difference. “When I think about how difficult this was, I will always remember Sarah as being an important factor of the positive outcome,” the patient wrote in the nomination.
The DAISY Award recognizes the outstanding professionalism and compassion that nurses bring to patients and families every day. It was established by the DAISY Foundation in California in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “diseases attacking the immune system.” Nurses in Rapid City are selected 12 times a year for this recognition. Nurses are also honored in Custer, Lead-Deadwood, Spearfish and Sturgis. Visit monument.health/daisy to nominate.
