Self-care

Wear protection over the ears, such as earmuffs, around loud noises. Turn the volume down low while listening to music with headphones. Limit alcohol, caffeine and nicotine.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a health care provider right away if tinnitus happens with:

  • Trouble hearing.
  • Symptoms such as feeling faint, weak or woozy.
  • Anxiety or depression.

When to make a doctor's appointment

See a provider if:

  • Tinnitus gets in the way of daily life.
  • The symptoms start after a cold or other illness and don't get better within a week.
