Von Willebrand disease


A bleeding disorder caused by low levels of clotting protein, called von Willebrand factor, in the blood.

Overview

Von Willebrand disease is often inherited from one or both parents. In rare cases, it may develop later in life.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include frequent nosebleeds that don't stop within 10 minutes, bleeding from the gums, heavy or long menstrual bleeding, and excessive bleeding from a cut.

Treatments

Treatment focuses on stopping or preventing bleeding episodes, typically by using medicines.
