Reye's syndrome


A serious condition that causes swelling in the liver and brain.

Overview

Children recovering from a viral infection such as chickenpox or flu, especially if using aspirin, or who have a metabolic disorder are most at risk.

Symptoms

Early symptoms include diarrhea, rapid breathing, vomiting, and lethargy. Symptoms such as confusion, seizures, and loss of consciousness need emergency treatment.

Treatments

Treatment includes IV fluids, diuretics, and medication to prevent bleeding.
