Burning mouth syndrome

Ongoing or recurrent burning in the mouth with no obvious cause.

Overview

Burning mouth syndrome may affect the tongue and other parts of the mouth. It appears suddenly and can be severe, as if the mouth was scalded.

Symptoms

In addition to a burning sensation, symptoms may include a dry mouth with increased thirst, loss of taste, and taste changes, such as a bitter or metallic taste.

Treatments

Drinking more fluids and avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and spicy foods can help control pain.
