Atrial flutter

A condition in which the heart's upper chambers (atria) beat too quickly.

Overview

Rapid contractions of the upper chambers of the heart may spread to the lower chambers, resulting in rapid heartbeats.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include a racing heart (palpitations), shortness of breath, chest pain, and dizziness.

Treatments

Medications, electric shock, or procedures that destroy abnormal tissue in the heart may be used to restore a normal heartbeat or control the rate or prevent blood clots.
