Frequently Asked Questions

Nutrition Consultations

Why should I see a registered dietitian?

An expert can help you incorporate nutritious foods into your diet. A registered dietitian can answer questions about proper nutrition, help improve your food choices and provide guidance with regard to specific health concerns.

What credentials does a registered dietitian hold?

A registered dietitian (RD) has at least a four-year college degree with additional training, such as an internship, and has passed a national registration exam. Licensed nutritionists (LNs) are certified by the State of South Dakota. Caregivers in Nutrition Services at Monument Health hold either an RD or LN credential.

What can I expect from a nutrition consultation?

During the first visit, we will review your overall health and eating habits. We will then work with you to make positive, realistic changes to help you reach your health goals.

How long does each visit take?

The first visit usually takes one hour. The number and length of future visits will be decided at this time. Some people are happy with what they have learned in one visit. However, most people need at least one or two extra visits to review how well they are doing with their nutrition program and goals.

I’ve decided to see a dietitian. What do I do now?

You can start by calling us to schedule an individualized appointment. Self–referrals are always welcome! You may also call your provider to place a referral as some insurances cover your visit if you meet certain medical conditions. We are here to encourage and guide you in making changes and reaching your goals.
