RAPID CITY, S.D. (Aug. 22, 2019) – Monument Health Rapid City Hospital’s Emergency Department moves to its new location on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019. This move marks the opening of the new 44,000-square-foot Emergency Department.
Starting at 4 a.m. that day, patients and visitors will access the Emergency Department from new routes. Those coming from the north, west or east will enter the Emergency Department from Third Street off Fairmont Boulevard. Those coming from the south along Fifth Street will enter south of the hospital parking garage.
The public will get a chance to see the new Emergency Department, as well as the Heart and Vascular Unit (HVU) before the new addition is operational. The sneak-peek tours are on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tours will begin every 10 minutes.
The new Emergency Department will allow caregivers to treat more than 40 patients at a time. It will also include a larger drive-through ambulance garage and rooftop helicopter pad that is a short elevator ride to the Emergency Department.
The new Emergency Department and HVU are part of a multi-phase project to transform the Rapid City hospital campus. The 32-bed Heart and Vascular Unit (HVU) is 40 percent larger than the existing unit. Later phases, still under construction, are scheduled to be completed in 2020.
