Cardiologist publishes research on technique to open blocked lower-leg arteries

RAPID CITY, S.D. (Dec.. 21, 2020) – A research paper written by Bhaskar Purushottam, M.D., FACC, FSCAI, an Interventional Cardiologist and Vascular Specialist at Monument Health Heart and Vascular Institute in Rapid City, was recently published in the Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Therapy.
The paper, titled “Novel Technique to Cross Infrapopliteal Artery Chronic Total Occlusions,” discussed Dr. Purushottam’s innovative technique to open lower extremity arterial blockages in time-efficient and economical way.

Infrapopliteal arterial disease is the blockage in the arteries below the knee, which often lead to critical limb ischemia [CLI], a condition that can cause ischemic rest pain, non-healing ulcers and gangrene. Infrapopliteal arterial disease in CLI often manifests as 100 percent blockages, often resulting in lower extremity amputations.

Dr. Purushottam’s work has drawn international attention this year. In early 2020, Dr. Purushottam was invited to be a presenter at the LINC 2020 Vascular Symposium in Leipzig, Germany, on six separate topics. He also published the first dedicated research study along with his Mount Sinai colleagues in New York regarding the gender differences in the treatment response to the widely used drug-coated balloon angioplasty for symptomatic lower extremity arterial disease. This paper was published in the Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery in May this year.

With Dr. Purushottam’s expertise in drug-coated balloon angioplasty treatment for lower extremity arterial disease, the prestigious Journal of Endovascular Therapy invited him to give a commentary on the IN. PACT Global study. This is the largest study, which studied the role of drug coated balloon angioplasty treatment in symptomatic complex real-world femoro-popliteal arterial disease. His commentary titled “Leave Nothing Behind: No Stent, No Restenosis, No Mortality” was published in the same journal in July this year.
