RAPID CITY, S.D. (Sept. 21, 2020) – Erin Rup, Registered Nurse with the Intensive Care Unit at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital, has been recognized with the prestigious DAISY Award. A national program, the award is presented to nurses across the United States who go above and beyond for their patients and community. Erin was nominated by the daughter of a former patient.

“My first interaction with Erin was actually on a day when she wasn’t his assigned nurse,” said the nominator. “My dad had asked for help so I went to notify Erin with the hope that she’d notify his assigned nurse. Instead Erin stepped in to help him herself and stuck around for several minutes until she could confirm that he was comfortable.”

“The next morning we were all so excited that she was his nurse,” the patient’s daughter said. “That entire day she was extraordinary with him and with us, his family. She told him that she can’t wait for the day that he walks himself into the ICU to visit her so that they can cry in victory together. That speaks to her encouraging, optimistic, compassionate heart. She’s become a friend and light in this trying time. We wish we could thank her more.”

The DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses recognizes those who display dedication to the health and wellness of their patients. The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in California in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “diseases attacking the immune system.” The DAISY Award continues to recognize and celebrate the outstanding professionalism and compassion that nurses bring to patients and their families every day.
