SPEARFISH, S.D. (Dec. 17, 2020) — Monument Health recently donated $5,000, the proceeds of its summer athletic performance camp, to Spearfish High School to upgrade its weight room.

As part of its commitment to community health and wellness, Monument Health employs athletic trainers and strength coaches and places them in area high schools and universities, at no cost to the schools. At Spearfish High School, Rose Lewis, CSCS, serves as the head strength and conditioning coach for all of the Spearfish Spartan sports teams. “I train them in the weight room, as well as programming all of their performance conditioning work in the off-season,” Lewis said.

Lewis doesn’t take the summers off, however. During the summer of 2020, she and fellow Monument Health strength coach, Kellan Anderson, ran a six-week athletic performance camp that focused on speed, agility, endurance and performance.

“Monument Health is putting money from that program back into the school so that we can improve the weight room,” Lewis said. “We are all about taking our program to the next level, and providing these kids with the resources to do so.”

Thomas Worsley, President of Spearfish Hospital and Hills Markets added, “The vision for the summer camp was that benefits could come back and have a positive effect on Spearfish High School and its students. We really appreciate our partnership with the high school and school district. We are proud to support their commitment to health and wellness for their students in our community.”

Spearfish High School already has an idea of how they can put the $5,000 donation to good use. Stephanie Ornelas, Activities Director for Spearfish High School, was also on hand when the donation was made. “We’ve got our eyes on a new squat rack with specialized features that many of our athletes can use to improve their game,” she said.

“We’re really grateful for this partnership, not just the donation,” added Ornelas. “The trainers from Monument Health, like Coach Rose, have been great personnel to work with. They’re outstanding. They work well with our athletes. They train them, plus teach them at the same time, and we appreciate having them here.”
