Physician Spotlight: Matthew Werpy, D.O.

My Role

I have the privilege of leading an outstanding group of physicians and advanced practice providers while partnering closely with leaders across the Monument Health system. One of the most meaningful parts of my role is recognizing that the greatest impact we can have on patients comes through strong, coordinated teams. Hospital medicine is uniquely collaborative. On any given day, we work side by side with nursing, pharmacy, case management, laboratory, imaging, therapy services, wound care, quality teams, clinical documentation specialists and many physician specialties. My role is often to help bring these groups together so that care feels seamless for patients and families. Although Rapid City and Spearfish serve different communities, what connects them is a shared commitment to doing the right thing for patients. In doing so, we are able to extend our reach and impact more patients across the region.

My Goals

My goals are centered on one simple concept: if we take care of our teams, they can take better care of patients. That starts with reducing unnecessary complexity and administrative burden so clinicians can spend more time where they are needed most, at the bedside. Health care is increasingly complex, and I am focused on helping create systems that make it easier to deliver great care. I also want to help ensure that patients across western South Dakota continue to have access to high-quality care close to home. That requires strong relationships not only within our hospitals, but also with the rural communities and partners we serve. Another important focus for me is developing people. I have been fortunate to learn from leaders who invested in me, and I try to carry that forward by supporting others in their growth; whether in leadership, education, clinical informatics, quality improvement or clinical practice.

My Passion

Outside of medicine, I have a passion for the outdoors and spending time with family. I enjoy activities like fishing, hunting, dog training, archery, habitat work, kayaking, paddleboarding and skiing. Living in this region makes it easy to appreciate the outdoors and the time it gives to reset and recharge. More than any specific activity, I value the opportunity to share these experiences with my children. Some of my most rewarding moments are supporting them in their academic and athletic activities and watching them learn, grow and develop confidence through those experiences. Many of the lessons that come
from sports and outdoor activities such as perseverance, teamwork, preparation and resilience are lessons they will carry into all aspects of life.

My Team

What makes me most proud of our Monument Health Hospital Medicine team is not only their clinical excellence but also the people they are. We have a diverse group of physicians and advanced practice providers with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Many have deep roots in western South Dakota and the surrounding region, while others have joined us from across the United States and around the world. That diversity of experience strengthens our team and helps us provide exceptional care to the patients and communities we serve. Our clinicians are deeply committed to their patients, supportive of one another and dedicated to continuous improvement. I am confident that the talent, compassion and collaborative nature of this group will continue to drive our success and ensure high-quality care for years to come.
