LEAD-DEADWOOD, S.D. (NOV. 17, 2022) – Courtney Quinn, a Registered Nurse at Lead-Deadwood Hospital has received the prestigious DAISY Award. A national program, the award is presented to nurses who go above and beyond for their patients and community. She was nominated by a fellow caregiver.

The caregiver wrote, “Courtney came from the ER to help on the floor. She was very gentle and compassionate with a lot of patience while helping me. Courtney is the most caring young woman you will ever meet. I am from another part of the country and the nurses there are not like the nurses here. We are lucky to have nurses like Courtney.”

RAPID CITY, S.D. (Nov. 11, 2022) – Zaida Williams, a Nurse Aide at Rapid City Hospital, has received the TULIP Award. This award is presented to nursing support caregivers who exemplify Monument Health’s values of trust, respect, compassion, community and excellence. These individuals make a difference in the lives of their patients and patient families, and are a vital part of our nursing care teams. Zaida was nominated by a patient.

“From the bottom of my heart, this aide made me laugh and cry with her personality. She stayed with me during all my care, even when I was worried and anxious. She provided me with praise for working hard with my care,” wrote the patient. “There are not enough words in any language that can show my admiration for how I feel about Zaida. I love her with all my heart. She has been a Godsend to me during my stay.”

Monument Health offers minimally invasive lung cancer biopsy with new Ion robot

RAPID CITY, SD (Nov. 9, 2022) – Robotic-assisted technology is now in use at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital. The Intuitive Ion platform allows pulmonologists to perform minimally invasive biopsies and other challenging tasks, like obtaining tissue samples from otherwise hard to reach areas using a thin, maneuverable catheter.

“It really allows us to take biopsies anywhere in the lung,” said Rorak Hooten, M.D., Pulmonology and Critical Care Physician, “as opposed to before where we were kind of limited.” 

Ion provides a planned path based on a patient’s CT scan allowing physicians to target specific areas of a patient’s lungs. It also allows tracking for multiple biopsy attempts. It is designed to work alongside Monument Health’s existing technology and allows for higher precision during biopsies with reduced risk to the patient.

Typically, physicians use CT scans to conduct initial lung screenings then perform biopsies for a more in-depth look and to confirm the presence of cancer. Screenings and biopsies are key to the early detection and diagnosis of cancer and significantly improve treatment outcomes for patients. 

Dr. Hooten said the Ion provides a safe and efficient way to confirm a cancer diagnosis in patients, compared to traditional biopsies. “If they have cancer, we can do all of the staging in one procedure instead of multiple,” Dr. Hooten said, and stressed the importance of minimizing time between diagnosis and treatment. “Cancer doesn’t grow or change overnight, but if you have to wait, the weeks can add up quickly and a patient’s situation may change drastically.” 

Lung cancer is the third most common cancer behind breast cancer and skin cancer and is responsible for more deaths in the United States than any other form of cancer. Most lung cancer is found in adults 65 years-of-age or older, and risk factors include a history of smoking or vaping, exposure to asbestos, radon gas and other pollutants and family history among others.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (Nov. 3, 2022) – Matt Nugent, a Registered Nurse at Rapid City Hospital, has received the prestigious DAISY Award. A national program, the award is presented to nurses who go above and beyond for their patients and community. He was nominated by a patient family member.

The patient’s family member wrote, “My dad was admitted to Monument Health while on vacation. He spent multiple days in the ICU with Matthew as his day nurse. It was a rough time for my dad, but he was really touched by the care and connection he made with Matthew. Matthew made my dad feel dignified during a time that my dad didn’t have full control over his body.”

The nomination continued, “On the day my dad was discharged, he was Matthew’s only patient. Matthew took it upon himself to wheel my dad out, although he could have had someone else do it. My dad expressed numerous times how well cared for he felt. It takes a special person to make patients feel like family.”

A national program, the award is presented to nurses who go above and beyond for their patients and community. She was nominated by a patient’s spouse. 

The patient’s spouse wrote, “My husband had been a patient at Monument Health for multiple weeks. When he transferred to the ICU for a second time, we were all filled with concern and anxiety. When Halli became his nurse, our concerns were lightened because of her many wonderful qualities as a nurse and a person.”

Halli reassured and comforted the patient and his family, who felt more at ease when they needed to leave the hospital, and their loved one, in Halli’s care.

“We could tell she is passionate about her job and wants to make a difference,” continued the patient’s spouse. “When my husband was finally strong enough and able to speak, he even commented, ‘She is a good one.’”

Monument Health receives COLA Laboratory Excellence Award

RAPID CITY, SD (Oct. 10, 2022) – Laboratories at Monument Health Orthopedic and Specialty Hospital and Monument Health Rapid City Urgent Care, Jackson Blvd. received the COLA Laboratory Excellence Award. COLA is a leading national laboratory accreditor, whose program and standards enable clinical laboratories and staff to meet U.S. Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and other regulatory requirements.

Accreditation is given to laboratories that apply the highest standards of quality in day-to-day operations, demonstrate continued accuracy in the performance of proficiency testing, and pass a rigorous on-site laboratory survey. The Excellence Award is awarded to only 11 percent of surveyed labs to accredited laboratories that are found to be compliant with all COLA essential and required criteria during their on-site survey. Additionally, award recipients must have demonstrated successful proficiency testing for the prior three testing events with no substantiated complaints against the laboratory.

Recipients of the Clinical Excellence Award exemplify a commitment to the practice of medicine and to Monument Health’s mission, vision, and values. Their knowledge, skill and professionalism in day-to-day interactions with patients, families and colleagues reflect their commitment to clinical excellence. She was nominated by a colleague.

The colleague wrote, “Jami provides her patients and their families with care that is unmatched. She is always checking in on her patients, taking the time to call them personally. She has one of the busiest clinical practices in our system, but never lets her busy schedule make patients and their parents feel any less heard or attended to. She makes families feel safe and well informed. She is so deserving of this award.”

Criteria for the Clinical Excellence Award includes:

  • Must be an employed physician or provider. 
  • Exceptional knowledge and skill within their specialty which enables them to provide excellent clinical care.
  • Shows respect to patients, families and colleagues through compassion, empathy, courtesy and patience.
  • A strong sense of pride and professional passion for serving patients.

Anyone can nominate a Monument Health physician or provider for this award. Nominations are reviewed and a monthly award selection is made by the Physician Operations Group. One award will be given out monthly.

Ivory Jenson, a Certified Nursing Assistant in the Progressive Care Unit at Rapid City Hospital has received the TULIP Award. This award is presented to nursing support caregivers who exemplify Monument Health’s values of trust, respect, compassion, community and excellence. These individuals make a difference in the lives of their patients and patient families, and are a vital part of our nursing care teams. Ivory was nominated by a patient’s parent.

In the nomination, the patient’s parent described Ivory’s care, remarking that she was very efficient and caring, and that she learned in conversation that Ivory plans to attend nursing school in the future. “I have been a nurse for 17 years and I am still learning daily, and recently, I learned from the CNA who provided outstanding care to my son,” the parent wrote. “She was a very bright light during a very unsettling time. I did tell her that she would make a great nurse someday and I meant it. We can all learn from Ivory.”

Monument Health and VP Brad Haupt receive South Dakota Friend of Transit 2022 award

RAPID CITY, SD (Sept. 20, 2022) – Brad Haupt, Vice President of Supply Chain and Contract Management for Monument Health received the Friend of Transit 2022 award from the Dakota Transit Association. Haupt was nominated for his efforts working with Prairie Hills Transit (PHT) to facilitate affordable transportation for Monument Health patients and nursing home residents to facilities in South Dakota and around the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barb Cline, Executive Director of PHT, nominated Haupt and Monument Health for the award. In her nomination she noted the steps taken to get drivers educated and prepared in March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact western South Dakota. She credited Haupt with providing the materials that allowed transportation services to continue operation. 

Cline said, “We were never lacking for the equipment, masks or sanitizer we needed to keep our staff and passengers safe.” Cline says Haupt also provided valuable training to drivers. “PPE was provided for our discharge driver,” she continued, “he was trained, at no cost, similarly to hospital personnel.” 

The Friend of Transit Award is given to an individual, business or agencies from North and South Dakota, who have done an outstanding job in supporting transit in their communities or state. Nominees range from volunteers to state legislators and cannot be paid or employed by a transit entity.
