Monument Health utilizes a shared leadership model permitting two-way communication and decision making among the Chief Nursing Officer, the leadership team and various councils and committees made up of professional nurses providing direct patient care.
Nurses are involved in establishing standards of practice and serve on committees that address excellence in patient care and safe, efficient, and effective operation of the organization.
Nursing Council’s at Monument Health
Coordinating Council
Integrate and coordinate activities of Shared Decision-Making councils. Oversight of UMC and system-wide councils, help ensure accountability to metrics and outcomes, and assign items brought from the UMCs to system-wide councils. Facilitates periodic evaluation of the status of the Monument Health Shared Decision-Making structure and any needed changes or redesign.
Nursing Practice Council
Ensure nursing practice is evidence, or best practice based and follows professional and regulatory standards. Provide mentorship for nursing evidence-based practices and research through a subcommittee. Provide support for policy and procedure review through subcommittee. Regularly reviews nursing Professional Practice and Care Delivery Model and facilitates redesign as needed.
Healthcare Informatics Council
Optimization of clinical documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to improve efficiency, quality and compliance with regulatory standards. Documentation will be based on professional scope and standards of practice, evidence and best practice recommendations. The Council also provides input into new applications, functionality, upgrades and projects as requested.
Professional Development Council
Promote and encourage a culture for nursing to develop personal and professional growth including: education, leadership and collaborative opportunities.
Orientation, competency processes and continuing clinical education opportunities will be developed utilizing a needs assessment and evidence-based practice. Decisions will support RN autonomy and top-of-licensure practice.
Nursing Quality, Safety, and Performance Improvement Council
Provide direction for performance improvement of nursing-sensitive indicators. Review nursing-sensitive data, assist to establish metrics and efficient data collection methods to evaluate nursing care system-wide. Ensure nursing practice is evidence or best practice based and follows professional and regulatory standards.
Ambulatory Council
Provides a venue for system focused standardization of ambulatory practice, policies, procedures and development. Front-line caregivers from various clinics come together to participate in decisions that impact their practice. Solutions are achieved through evidence or best practice.
Nursing Support Council
Allows for standardization among nursing support roles when applicable, as well as professional development and engagement activities. Nursing support caregivers include nurse aides, certified nursing assistants, technicians and other support roles.
Advanced Practice Provider Council
Provides a voice and structure for the APPs to participate in decisions that impact their practice. Advanced Practice Providers are involved in identifying issues related to professional practice, policies, procedures, quality measures, clinical education, orientation, competencies, professional development, patient experience, caregiver engagement, caregiver and patient safety, community involvement and financial stewardship. Inclusive of Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, etc.
Nursing Research & Evidence Based Practice Committee
Serves as a resource to foster the development and implementation of nursing evidence-based practice and nursing research that will impact nursing practice and leadership and improve patient care outcomes. The committee also generates new evidence-based practice and nursing research projects that can be integrated into system-wide nursing practice. It accomplishes this through:
- Expanding the knowledge base of clinical nurses regarding evidence-based practice (EBP)
- Inspiring a spirit of inquiry to discover and implement current evidence-based practices from the nursing literature
- Developing tools, resources and mentors to support clinical nurses in generating and implementing EBP and nursing research
- Serving as mentors to nurses in the development, application, presentation and publication of nursing research and evidence-based practices
- Function as a feasibility/review committee for nursing research prior to submission to the IRB
