Spearfish clinic introduces high-resolution bone density scanning

SPEARFISH, S.D. (Sept. 18, 2019 ) – New state-of-the-art technology at Monument Health Medical Clinic 10th Street in Spearfish offers more precise bone density measurements to better diagnose osteoporosis and more accurately monitor patients in treatment.

The GE iDXA device is the first of its kind in clinical use in South Dakota. The scans produce hi-resolution imaging that allows caregivers in Spearfish to do a more comprehensive spine analysis.

This allows doctors to precisely measure bone density to help predict fracture risk for patients with bone problems. In addition, this research-grade technology allows certified technicians, certified readers and physicians to track the progress of osteoporosis over time and measure the effectiveness of treatments and therapies.

“The quality of these images allows us to do accurate spinal scans for the first time,” Dr. Richard Keim said. “Our old technology allowed us to diagnose osteoporosis, but this new hi-resolution scan gives us more information to start and monitor effective therapies. Seventy percent of spine fractures never come to medical attention. With better diagnosis capability we can identify more people who may benefit from treatment.”
