Doctors in our Family Medicine Residency (FMR) program work with accomplished physicians to provide comprehensive, longitudinal medical care to patients at our FMR Clinic in Rapid City and at Rapid City Hospital. The program is affiliated with the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota and was originally created to develop physicians who can provide broad-based, high-quality, primary care in a rural setting.
Residents receive extensive post-graduate level education in the medical and surgical disciplines, including the practice of obstetrics, with most residents delivering more than 100 babies during their training. The FMR Clinic is a 24,000-square-foot healing environment with 23 exam rooms, 2 OMM rooms and 2 dedicated procedure rooms.
Our residents love practicing in the Black Hills, a mecca for outdoor recreation and beautiful scenery. The opportunities to experience nature and be active allow our providers to enjoy a wonderful work/life balance.
A message from the Program Director
Greetings from the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota! Thank you for your interest in the Rapid City Hospital Family Medicine Residency. Family Medicine is an incredibly challenging and rewarding career, allowing the physician to partner with patients and communities to overcome health challenges and promote overall well-being. Since our program’s inception in 1995, we have been committed to training our resident physicians to provide full spectrum, comprehensive medical care in all settings with a special focus on rural communities.
Our program boasts a robust obstetric experience, a busy inpatient service, and a large, established outpatient clinic in an underserved area of Rapid City. Patients at our FMR Clinic can receive minor surgical care, cryosurgery, OB ultrasonography, colposcopy, and vasectomy. In the inpatient setting, we utilize a multidisciplinary approach to care, coupled with a state-of-the-art electronic medical records system.
Our program emphasizes work/life balance, resiliency, and self-care. Residents participate in wellness activities, have the ability to pursue personal appointments outside of work, and have 24-hour access to an employee assistance program with counseling services. Residents also have time set aside for charting and reflection. We strive to create a supportive environment in which our physicians can grow their skills and gain confidence.
If you are interested in becoming a Family Medicine physician who can practice full spectrum care in any setting, we hope you consider the Rapid City Hospital Family Medicine Residency program. We look forward to meeting you!
