RAPID CITY, S.D. – Monument Health’s Rehabilitation Institute building, part of the Rapid City Hospital Campus at Fifth Street and Fairmont Boulevard, will be demolished later in January as the next phase of hospital construction begins.
Before demolition, the Rapid City Fire Department will conduct a series of training exercises in the vacant building. The exercises are planned for several days in January, beginning Wednesday, Jan. 16.
The Rehabilitation Institute’s departments and services were recently moved to other locations. Once the Rehabilitation Institute site is cleared, the contractor will complete steel framing on the new five-story hospital clinic addition and begin building the second parking garage west of the existing garage.
“The Rehabilitation Institute building has served Monument Health well over the years. With the changing needs of our patients we need to provide the best healing environment possible. This includes safety, accessibility and the best quality for our patients. The current Rehabilitation Institute is not able to do this any longer,” said Dave Ellenbecker, Vice President of Facilities Management and Plant Operations.
When construction at the main hospital is completed, many physicians will be able to perform surgery and other procedures, visit patients in their hospital rooms and conduct outpatient exams all in one location. The new addition adds much-needed space for Monument Health’s Emergency Department and a rooftop helipad.
