RAPID CITY, S.D. (Aug. 20, 2018) – Mark T. Garry, M.D., a psychiatrist at the Monument Health Behavioral Health Center in Rapid City, has been named the 2018 recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award. The award is given each year to one faculty member from among the nation’s 151 accredited medical schools who excels as a caring and compassionate mentor for medical students.
Dr. Garry is an associate professor at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. He teaches medical students in western South Dakota as well as doctors in the Monument Health Family Medicine Residency program. The Association of American Medical Colleges, which administers the Gold Award, cited one example of Garry’s compassion and care:
“A few years back, Dr. Garry noticed that his next patient, a shy boy who had been bullied extensively in school, had tucked his pants into his socks. Before inviting the boy into his office, Dr. Garry tucked his pants into his socks in a similar fashion, as did the medical student who was training with him. When the boy saw what they had done, his face lit up and he opened up to the pediatric psychiatrist in ways he had never done before, his mother later recalled.”
The AAMC praised Dr. Garry for his innate ability to see each patient as a unique individual and connect with the most vulnerable and underserved. Those abilities also earned him the Sanford School of Medicine Class of 2016’s Anton Hyden Distinguished Professor Award.
“We’re proud of the work Dr. Garry has done as a physician and as a teacher of future physicians. His compassion, empathy and expertise are truly gifts that he gives to our patients, medical students and residents,” said Brad Archer, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at Monument Health.
Before joining Monument Health, Dr. Garry spent nine years at the Sioux San Hospital in Rapid City, providing mental health services to Native American patients. He has also served on the City of Rapid City’s Suicide Prevention Committee and the South Dakota Governor’s Task Force for State Suicide Prevention. He has worked nationally to enhance access to child and adolescent psychiatry through telemedicine, for which he received the Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2006.
Dr. Garry earned his medical degree from the Emory University School of Medicine, where he was also a Robert W. Woodruff Fellow in Medicine. He completed his residency in psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine.
