Monument Health brings 3D mammo to Flormann Clinic

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Monument Health Medical Clinic on Flormann Street in Rapid City invites the public to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Genius 3D Mammography system. The new technology improves early detection and treatment of breast cancer.

The ribbon-cutting is scheduled for noon Thursday, Nov. 29, at 640 Flormann St.

One in eight women will develop breast cancer, but if it’s caught early the five-year survival rate is almost 100 percent. Using this three-dimensional technology, radiologists can better detect breast cancer deep within the tissue, where it might be hidden during a traditional two-dimensional mammogram.

“Bringing this type of technology to our patients at Monument Health is an exciting experience for our imaging team,” said Jamie Madden, Senior Director of Imaging. “Like traditional mammography, 3D mammography uses X-rays to produce images of breast tissue in order to detect lumps, tumors or other abnormalities. 3D mammography is capable of producing more detailed images that are deeper in the breast.”

3D mammography captures multiple slices of the breast, all at different angles. The images are brought together to create crystal clear 3D images of the breast. The radiologist is then able to review the image, one slide at a time, almost like turning pages in a book, Madden said.
