RAPID CITY, S.D. – Todd Anderson, a registered nurse in the Orthopedic-Neurosurgery Department at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital, won the Rapid City Market’s DAISY Award for January.
A national program, the DAISY Award recognizes nurses who display extraordinary dedication to the health and wellness of their patients. Anderson was nominated by a patient who had recently lost her husband.
“I sincerely appreciated the skilled, compassionate care that I received from Todd during my hospitalization. Todd was in charge of a busy unit supporting students and novice nurses, yet he found the time to not only check on me frequently, but to sit and talk with me,” she wrote.
The woman was hospitalized shortly after the loss of her husband. She was sad and scared. He had endured three months of sickness, much of the time spent in patient rooms. The last place she wanted to be during her grief was a hospital bed. Todd understood that, she said.
“He advocated for my discharge by evening – really assertively coordinating my test schedules, results, communication to physicians and the needed discharge order! I was grateful that he shared one of his grief experiences with me. It made me feel like I could make it out of my despair,” she added. “Todd is a remarkable nurse. I am grateful for his compassionate care.”
The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in California in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “diseases attacking the immune system.” The DAISY Award continues to recognize and celebrate the outstanding professionalism and compassion that nurses bring to patients and their families every day.
Nurses in the Monument Health Rapid City Market are selected 12 times a year for this recognition. Nurses are also honored in Custer, Lead-Deadwood, Spearfish and Sturgis. To nominate a Monument Health nurse for the DAISY Award, please visit www.regionalhealth.org/daisy.
