SPEARFISH, S.D., (Jan. 20, 2020) — Monument Health orthopedic surgeons will soon be performing robotically assisted knee replacement surgery with the help of Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA® Knee System. The system combines robotic technology with industry-leading knee implants to help surgeons personalize procedures for their patients.
Monument Health has acquired two ROSA systems, which will be used by orthopedic surgeons at Monument Health Spearfish Hospital and the Monument Health Orthopedic & Specialty Hospital in Rapid City.
Orthopedic Surgeon Richard Little, M.D. said he looks forward to using the ROSA system at Monument Health Spearfish Hospital. He said robotic assistance will bring a new level of precision to knee replacement surgery.
“We can consistently have a near-perfect positioning of the components,” he said. “That can improve the function of the knee, the natural feel of the knee and the longevity of the knee — I’ve been waiting my entire career for something like this.”
ROSA Knee includes features to assist with bone resections and assess the state of soft tissues in order to facilitate implant positioning during surgery. Data provided by ROSA Knee helps the surgeon make complex decisions and use technology to control surgical instruments, allowing for greater precision and flexibility during procedures.
“The ROSA robotic technology for total knee arthroplasty allows the surgeon to place the total knee components with extreme precision. The data acquired during implantation with the robot allows for a more personalized approach to each individual patient’s needs,” said Rapid City Orthopedic Surgeon Paul Miller, M.D. “This improved positioning of the implants should lead to better long-term outcomes.”
