Monument Health Bariatric and Metabolic Institute earns national accreditation for metabolic, bariatric surgery

May 17, 2024 Monument Health Bariatric and Metabolic Institute earns national accreditation for metabolic, bariatric surgery

Rapid City, S.D. (May 17, 2024) – Monument Health Bariatric and Metabolic Institute (BMI) in Rapid City has been recognized as a MBSAQIP Accredited Comprehensive Center by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint initiative of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). The Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery programs in Rapid City and Spearfish are the only programs in western South Dakota.

MBSAQIP accreditation ensures that Monument Health’s bariatric patients receive comprehensive, multidisciplinary medical care, leading to improved patient outcomes and long-term success. Accredited centers like the Metabolic and Bariatric Institute at Monument Health are dedicated to offering specialized preoperative and postoperative care tailored specifically for patients with obesity. Bariatric procedures, commonly known as weight-loss surgery, involve altering the anatomy of a patient’s digestive system or inducing physiological changes in energy balance and fat metabolism to achieve desired outcomes.

To earn accreditation, the bariatrics program met essential criteria for staffing, training, facility infrastructure, and patient care pathways, ensuring its ability to support patients with obesity. Both Rapid City BMI and Spearfish Hospital underwent an extensive site visit by an experienced bariatric surgeon, who reviewed the centers’ structure, processes, and clinical outcomes data.

“This accreditation is a testament to our surgical staff’s relentless dedication in delivering the highest quality care for metabolic and bariatrics patients,” said surgeon David Fromm, M.D. “It recognizes our commitment to meeting the unique needs of these patients before, during, and after surgery, ultimately contributing to the great outcomes we’ve accomplished together.”

As part of Monument Health’s ongoing commitment to patient care, the Rapid City BMI program is pleased to welcome Kyle Larson, D.O., a board-certified family medicine physician specializing in wellness medicine and weight management. Dr. Larson joins the Monument Health Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, acting as the program’s initial point of contact when a patient begins their weight loss journey.

Dr. Larson completed his medical degree at Rocky Vista University – College of Osteopathic Medicine in Parker, Colorado, and his family medicine residency at Monument Health’s Family Medicine Residency Program in Rapid City. His addition to the MBSAQIP-accredited obesity medicine and metabolic surgery program further strengthens Monument Health’s dedication to providing exceptional care for patients with obesity.
