Monument Health and City of Custer reach agreement on former long-term care facility

May 11, 2023

CUSTER, S.D. (May 11, 2023) – Monument Health and the City of Custer have reached an agreement on the ownership and use of the former Custer Care Center building at 1065 Montgomery St. in Custer. Within the agreement the City of Custer will take ownership of the building on May 3, 2023.

Monument Health currently uses the location to provide food and laundry services for the Custer Hospital, Clinic and Assisted Living Facility. The agreement allows for Monument Health to continue to have access to those services while allowing the city to find a new tenant for the property.

“We are a proud partner and dedicated member of the City of Custer,” said Barb Hespen, President of Monument Health Custer Hospital. “As a member of this community we want Custer to have the opportunity to find the right care provider to serve the needs of the community. We are dedicated to providing high-quality patient care now and into the future. It’s also important that the community has access to all the services it needs. We have appreciated the collaboration with the City of Custer on the future use of this facility.”

The Custer Care Center closed in 2022. At the time it was a licensed, 76-bed skilled-nursing facility. Custer city officials plan to find a new organization to open a skilled nursing facility in the same location.
