Hemorrhage

Internal or external bleeding that may occur anywhere, and depending on the location, may range from a bruise to a life-threatening brain bleed.

Self-care

For minor injuries, apply pressure to any visibly bleeding wound, and elevate the area. Apply ice for up to 20 minutes several times daily, and if painful, take acetaminophen.

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Sudden, severe headache
  • New-onset constant headache
  • Moderate to severe injury
  • Persistent painful swelling that doesn't improve with self-care

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Slow to heal bruising
  • White area of the eye fills with blood
  • Focused pain and swelling with bruise
