Heel pain


Soreness on the back or the underside of the heel that may make walking uncomfortable or difficult.

Self-care

Rest. And avoid running, standing for a long time or walking on hard surfaces. Put ice on the heel for up to 20 minutes, three times a day. Try heel cups or wedges in shoes.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a health care professional immediately if there is:

  • Severe pain and swelling.
  • Heel pain caused by injury.
  • A problem flexing or bending the foot downward.
  • No way to walk comfortably.
  • Fever associated with numbness or tingling in the heel.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a health care professional if heel pain:

  • Happens at rest.
  • Lasts or worsens over a few weeks or more despite home care.
  • Limits the ability to work or do daily tasks.
