Self-care

Self-care includes eating smaller meals. Following a low fiber diet, limiting milk and other foods with lactose, and avoiding carbonated beverages may prevent belly swelling.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Pain
  • High fever
  • Severe diarrhea or bloody stools

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Swelling won't go away
  • Tender abdomen
  • Other, unexplained symptoms
