Sprained ankle

Published on May 8, 2026

Description

An injury that happens when the ankle rolls, twists or turns in an odd way.

Overview

A sprained ankle happens when an ankle rolls, twists or turns in a way it isn't meant to move. This can stretch or tear the tough bands of tissue that help hold the ankle bones together. These tough bands of tissue are called ligaments. Most sprained ankles affect the ligaments on the outside of the ankle.

Symptoms

The main symptom of a sprained ankle is pain, especially when putting weight on the ankle. Other symptoms include swelling, bruising and not being able to move the ankle much.

Treatments

Treatment for a sprained ankle depends on how bad the injury is. Many people treat a sprained ankle at home with rest, ice and pain relievers. People with bad sprains might need to see a healthcare professional.
