A condition in which there are high levels of fat-like substances, called lipids, in the blood.

Description

A condition in which there are high levels of fat-like substances, called lipids, in the blood.

Overview

Examples of lipids include cholesterol and triglycerides. These substances can attach to the walls of blood vessels and restrict blood flow. This creates a risk of heart attack and stroke.

Symptoms

Hyperlipidemia does not cause any symptoms. A blood test to check cholesterol levels, called a lipid panel or lipid profile, is used to diagnose hyperlipidemia.

Treatments

Treatments include medicines, a healthy diet and exercise.
