Candidiasis

A fungal infection typically on the skin or mucous membranes caused by candida.

Description

A fungal infection caused by a type of yeast called candida.

Overview

Candida yeast lives on and inside the body. Most often, it's harmless. But if it grows out of control or goes deep into the body, it can infect certain body parts, organs or the blood.

Symptoms

Candidiasis symptoms vary depending on where the infection is. For example, vaginal candidiasis can cause itching and pain during sex. Candidiasis of the mouth and throat can cause discolored patches and soreness.

Treatments

Candidiasis treatment involves taking medicine to clear up the fungal infection. The medicine may be taken by mouth, placed in or on the infected site, or given through a vein. It depends on where the infection is.
