Aspiration pneumonia

Overview

Aspiration pneumonia is a lung infection caused by unintentional inhalation of food, drink, vomit, or saliva. Aspiration can happen if a brain injury or excessive use of alcohol or drugs disrupts the normal gag reflex.

Symptoms

Symptoms include fever and cough.

Treatments

Treatments may include clearing the lungs, pulmonary support, and medications.
