Alcohol withdrawal

Overview

It's not clear why some people experience more severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms than others, but it genetics may play a role.

Symptoms

Symptoms may occur from two hours to one to two days after ceasing to drink. They may include headaches, nausea, tremors, anxiety, hallucinations, and seizures.

Treatments

Physical symptoms are treated with medications. Drinking behavior is treated with counseling and support groups.
