RAPID CITY, S.D. – (Sept. 14, 2026) – Daniel Petereit, M.D., FASTRO, FABS, radiation oncologist at Monument Health Cancer Care Institute in Rapid City, has been inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 Inductee Class. Dr. Petereit was honored in the Professional category at the Hall of Fame’s Honors Ceremony, held in Chamberlain.
A Sioux Falls native, Dr. Petereit founded the NCI-funded Walking Forward program in 2002 to address cancer disparities among Native Americans. The program has enrolled more than 5,500 Native Americans in clinical trials, the highest total in the nation, and has facilitated more than 2,500 cancer screenings. Dr. Petereit’s work has produced 130 publications and secured $20 million in research funding.
The South Dakota Hall of Fame inducts up to ten South Dakotans each year whose achievements inspire youth, lead generations and build the state’s future. This year’s class represents a broad range of fields, including the professional, arts and entertainment, education, philanthropic and business sectors, and is celebrated for embodying leadership, innovation and dedication.
