STURGIS, S.D. (Aug.3, 2021) – Chaska Walker, a Registered Nurse at Sturgis Hospital, has received the prestigious DAISY Award. A national program, the award is presented to nurses who go above and beyond for their patients and community. She was nominated by two different individuals, each the family member of a patient.

The first, the parent of a patient who was brought in via ambulance because his body was shutting down from disease, said, “Chaska was one the nurses that night that really was kind and caring, and worked so hard to give him the best possible care and also assist us through our horrific night.” The nomination went on to say, “Her wonderful, caring attitude and kindness was such a blessing! I’m sure she stayed longer than her assigned shift and worked so hard to help us all!”

The other nomination described Chaska as, “a nurse who goes above and beyond,” and went on to say, “Not only did she take great care of our dying family member, she took the time to make sure we, the family, were comfortable and okay.”

The DAISY Award recognizes the outstanding professionalism and compassion that nurses bring to patients and families every day. It was established by the DAISY Foundation in California in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “diseases attacking the immune system.” Nurses in Rapid City are selected 12 times a year for this recognition. Nurses are also honored in Custer, Lead-Deadwood, Spearfish and Sturgis. Visit monument.health/daisy to nominate.
