RAPID CITY, S.D. (Oct. 18, 2021)Sandra Gruenig, a Registered Nurse at Rapid City Hospital, has received the prestigious DAISY Award. A national program, the award is presented to nurses who go above and beyond for their patients and community. She was nominated by a patient.

During the patient’s stay in the hospital, Sandra tended to their wounds and ailments with kindness and compassion, leaving the patient feeling as though she was receiving professional clinical treatment but with the care and warmth of family.

“I believe this nurse is special because she has made my stay here feel exactly as if I was at home, as if I was with family, rather than feeling like I was in a hospital,” the patient wrote. “I appreciate that she makes sure that everyone under her supervision knows and understands the ailments and treatment needs of her patients before duties begin. I am 100 percent grateful and satisfied with nurse Sandra’s care and overall presence at this hospital. Sandra represents your unit and Monument Health extraordinarily.”

The DAISY Award recognizes the outstanding professionalism and compassion that nurses bring to patients and families every day. It was established by the DAISY Foundation in California in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “diseases attacking the immune system.” Nurses in Rapid City are selected 12 times a year for this recognition. Nurses are also honored in Custer, Lead-Deadwood, Spearfish and Sturgis. Visit monument.health/daisy to nominate.
