Description

A group of diseases caused by germs called bacteria that are spread through tick bites.

Overview

Various types of spotted fever exist. Specific types happen in certain parts of the world, depending on which tick species infected with rickettsia bacteria live there. In general, ticks live in areas filled with grass, brush and trees. So check for ticks after spending time in the woods. Use tick prevention medicines on pets too.

Symptoms

Spotted fever symptoms may appear about 3 to 12 days after infection. Symptoms can include fever, chills, muscle pain, headache and eye redness. Once the fever starts, a rash often appears and spreads to the rest of the body. Serious illness can lead to vomiting, low blood pressure, confusion, coma or death.

Treatment

Spotted fever treatment often involves taking medicines called antibiotics that help get rid of germs. For serious illnesses, hospital care may be needed. This could include receiving fluids through a vein.
