In the role of a Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist, the key responsibilities entail gathering, organizing, and executing a range of standard laboratory examinations of differing levels of difficulty. There is also a requirement to support operational protocols within the department, encompassing activities such as maintaining quality standards, participating in proficiency evaluations, conducting calibrations, and fulfilling other pertinent laboratory obligations while overseeing the training of new staff members. The primary objective on a daily basis is to exhibit dedication towards meeting customer needs, upholding professional standards, and ensuring a safe environment.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

• Prepares and gathers biological samples for analysis using proper methods while preserving the specimen's integrity relative to the specific test being conducted.
• Evaluates specimens to ensure they meet set standards, preventing issues like hemolysis, inadequate volume, and incorrect anticoagulant application.
• Conducts all relevant tests efficiently and accurately in accordance with established protocols and procedures. Assesses specimen quality and determines its appropriateness for testing.
• Completes the analysis of tests and delivers the test outcomes promptly, satisfying the requirements of medical professionals.
• Ensures timely reporting of patient outcomes within the designated department. Addresses issues related to sample collection, outcome disclosure, and processing time.
• Coordinates department tasks to ensure optimal productivity.
• Analyzing and interpreting test outcomes in alignment with specific test criteria, conducting essential computations; utilizing laboratory findings for disease diagnosis or patient treatment.
• The initial calibration and standardization of equipment are guaranteed through the application of criteria that determine acceptable functioning and performance boundaries, such as precision, reproducibility, and accuracy.
• Responds to incoming calls in a timely and polite manner, clearly stating name and department. Shows sound decision-making skills in redirecting inquiries to the relevant department.
• Facilitates the seamless transfer of responsibilities during the current work period and for the next shift by receiving essential details and communicating them effectively to other healthcare staff.
• Shows a readiness and capability to teach other colleagues and pupils.
• All additional tasks as required.

Additional Requirements

Required:

Education - Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Associates degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science. Or high school graduate or equivalent and have successfully completed an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupation specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician)

Certification - Medical Lab Technician (MLT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technology (AMT), or Military Laboratory Specialist

Preferred:

Education - Bachelors degree in chemical, physical, or biologic Sciences or Clinical Laboratory Science or Associates with Medical Technologists (HEW)

Certification - Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certification - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)/American Medical Technology (AMT) or Health and Human Services (HEW)

Experience - 1+ years of Laboratory Experience

Physical Requirements:

Medium work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues.
