Monument Health is participating with Mayo Clinic and other health care systems in a research project to determine if blood plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients could be an effective treatment for patients hospitalized with severe infections. According to Mayo Clinic, the immediate goal of this research is to determine if convalescent plasma can improve the chance of recovery for people with the most severe disease.
Monument Health providers are working with recovered COVID-19 patients to participate in this trial. Requirements include a previous COVID-19 infection (as demonstrated by a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test or a positive SARS-CoV-2 antibody test) and to be symptom free for a minimum of 28 days.
Recovered patients would have to meet criteria for donating blood products along with being willing to spend 2 hours donating plasma at the Vitalant Blood Center. Donations can be made as often as every 4 weeks.
If you are interested in becoming a COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Donor visit Vitalant’s website for a brief screening process and instructions on scheduling donations.
